Hi Howard,

Thanks for the clarification! Your use case outlines the exact purpose of our External Contributors feature! In order to invite a user an External Contributor you need to:

1. Create an External-Facing Group (only admins and EC admins have the ability to do this)

2. As an admin or EC admin, invite the email to that specific group as role: External Contributor

You can read more about External Contributors here: http://developers.socialcast.com/admin/external-contributors/

Re: Cannot Start vCenter Server Appliance - "Waiting for vpxd to initialize: ....failed"

Hi there,

I have exact same problem on the linux- based vCenter server appliance 5.5 installed with OVA on the ESXi host 5.5.

I used:

Name: VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.5.0.20200-2183109_OVF10.ova

Release Date: 2014-10-09

Build Number: 2183109

All services can start except the vCenter.  It always says :

Starting vmware-vpxd: success

"Waiting for vpxd to initialized: .failed'.

I have checked the time on ESXi host and the vCenter and they matched since both the ESXi host and vCenter sync to same ntp server.

My DataBase is embedded and SSO is also embedded.  "Test Settings" is successful.

I followed instruction on VMware KB: vpxd process on the vCenter Server Appliance 5.x fails with the error: Signal 11 received

and modified /etc/vmware-vpx/vpx.cfg file as sugggested by adding the ThreadStackSizedKb line.  See below.

<threadPool>

       <TaskMax>90</TaskMax>
       <ThreadStackSizeKb>512</ThreadStackSizeKb>
       <threadNamePrefix>vpxd</threadNamePrefix>

</threadPool>

However, it doesn't work.

Anyone knows about this problem please help.

A few years ago I participated in a similar discussion (I am about to pull my hair out!!) where Windows incorrectly detected the virtual disk and placed it under "Other Devices" in the Device Manager. Can you please check whether it is the same in this case?

Hi mntnbighker,

I've checked your concern on my environment and no serious problem was found.

Trivial one was that all VM inventory existed was erased after reboot

although I've not still known the real reason for it until now...

Are you connected to a vCenter or an ESXi host ?

Re: Separate Physical Network for VSAN Kernel

Hi,

   I'm facing the same problem. I want to put the iSCSI and VSAN traffic on 10GbE network and leave the management and vMotion on 1GbE. If I connect an uplink from the 10GbE switch to 1GbE switch, everything works but the VSAN performance is really slow (30~50MB/sec). The iSCSI going through the same 10GbE port can achieve 500MB/sec. So I'm suspecting the VSAN is travelling up to the 1GbE network. If I disconnect the uplink from the 10GbE switch to 1GbE network, the iSCSI still works with high performance as before, but the VSAN becomes inaccessible. I have tested these configurations with two clusters each with three hosts, and the results are same.

   Any comments are very appreciated.

I will add that VMware has made public how it will be possible to further protect a virtual vCenter with the help of other features in vSphere 6.0, which will go GA in the very near future.

Specifically, Fault Tolerance will support quad-core vCPUs, so we will finally be able to enable FT for VMs that require dual (such as vCenter) or quad core CPUs.

You cannot access the "secondary" VM... this is "shadow" VM can be accessed only if the "primary" fails.

To achieve the print server high availability with possibility to apply updates without stop the print services in your company, you will need create a Print Server Failover Cluster, take a look here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj556311.aspx

I suspect you might be using the commands for ESX 4.x.

Instead of

$esxcli.nmp.path.list()

try using

$esxcli.storage.nmp.path.list()

The layout of the esxcli command changed between 4.x and 5.x

So while I've already looked into clustering and am not opposed to it, I guess my *real* question is: can I accomplish what I want to accomplish with VMWare VSphere 5 Enterprise Plus (we have this licence currently). Or is there another VMWare product under this license that would be able to accomplish this?

Thanks!

The answer is no... you can achieve what you want only with guest clustering solution... the VMware solutions, like HA/FT can provide a better availability to your print server virtual machine, but to make maintenance on guest OS, you will need another "active" guest OS serving users, that is not the case of HA/FT.

Perfect, thanks! That answered my question.

Have you tried reboot the guest virtual machine ? You can see the network virtual adapter on Windows Device Manager ?

Re: Best practices for backing up a webserver VM??

One way to minimize the downtime is shutdown the VM, take a snapshot, Power On the virtual machine again and clone the virtual machine from the snapshot... after the clone finish, you can copy the virtual machine (the cloned VM) files without worry about the time it will takes.

Great info - thanks.  however, can I be completely sure that if the report says they are aligned, that they are aligned, at least between the guest OS and the VMDK?

The official documentation I can found is only for vCenter Server Heartbeat implementations, anyway to avoid issues like described in VMware KB 2021458 you can exclude the process vpxd.exe or the entire folder where you installed VMware vCenter.

Andre,

sorry to circle back on this subject , I am still strangling to get my esxi box setup. I got an Intel PRO/1000 GT Desktop PCI Network Adapter Card  I installed it on my PCI slot but I am still getting the same error, that there is no network card device detected. What could be wrong? :-( . the specs are , Intel Pro/1000 GT DESKTOP ADAPTER, Runs at 10,100,1000 MBPS. Support Wake on Lan, Single RJ 45. -32 Bit PCI bus runs at 33 or 66 MHZ.

Thank you again.

Re: Disk Alignment on guest VM's

Regarding NetApp, this document may clarify, though it is out of date an has not been updated since vSphere 4.x:

http://www.netapp.com/us/system/pdf-reader.aspx?m=tr-3747.pdf&cc=us

I would like to know if there is more current information or official documentation from them. Different technicians that come into NetApp start with as varied of backgrounds as those commenting in this post, and may have express opinions  differing from each other [disclosure - I used to be one back during the time this was current] , but before something gets published as this paper, it gets more of an official approval process.

Important I think in this document is this concept, that with VMFS there are two layers, not one layer of alignment:

1. The layer between the guest file system and VMFS, and

2. the layer between VMFS and the Array (not as much of an issue in newer VMFS versions)

Any thoughts on this paper?
